Why do two of the same product have different best-before dates?

The short version: it is not a printing error, and neither box is wrong. A best-before or use-by date is set from the day a product was made or packed, not from the day it left the factory, sat in a warehouse, or reached your trolley. Two boxes of the same cereal, made three weeks apart, will carry two different dates even if you buy them in the same basket on the same afternoon. The date is a property of the batch, not of the product line in general — and once you see it that way, a shelf full of "identical" items stops looking like one thing and starts looking like what it actually is: several small piles, each on its own clock.

The date is anchored to a production run, not a calendar day

A factory does not stop and restart to line up with the day you happen to go shopping. It runs on its own schedule — a batch on Monday, a bigger batch the following week, maybe a gap over a holiday — and each run gets a date calculated the same way every time: production day plus however long that product is rated to hold up. That formula is completely consistent. What varies is the input, and the input is whichever day the specific box in your hand actually came off the line. Buy two boxes on the same trip and you are not buying "the same date twice." You are buying two independent answers to the same formula, and there is no reason those two production runs happened on the same day just because your shopping trip did.

Why a shelf mixes old stock and new stock together

In principle, stores rotate stock so the earliest dates sell first: new deliveries go to the back of the shelf, and whatever is already there gets pulled to the front. In practice this depends on a staff member actually doing it every time a delivery lands, and deliveries do not arrive on a schedule tidy enough to guarantee it. A slow week leaves older stock sitting at the front for longer than planned; a rush restock sometimes gets shelved wherever there is room. The result is a shelf where a batch from three weeks ago and a batch from yesterday can end up side by side, and nothing about the packaging makes that obvious unless you actually read both dates.

This is also why reaching past the front row to dig out a later date rarely gets you much. The front item is normally still comfortably inside the safety margin the manufacturer built into the date in the first place — margin exists precisely to absorb the ordinary unevenness of distribution and storage, not to describe the exact day something turns. Digging for the newest date mostly just leaves the older, perfectly fine stock sitting there for someone else, or for no one, until a store eventually has to write it off.

Two boxes, two clocks, once they are both in your kitchen

The part that actually matters is what happens after checkout. Two cartons of the same product do not merge into one item just because they share a name and a shelf. Each has its own date, and the moment they are both in your fridge or your cupboard, the sensible move is to treat the earlier date as the one to open first — regardless of which carton you happen to reach for out of habit, and regardless of which one you bought most recently. That sounds obvious written down. It is much less obvious standing in front of a fridge with two nearly identical cartons and no memory of which one arrived when.

This is exactly the situation that produces the "still had one in the back" discovery weeks later. You buy a second carton of something before finishing the first — a completely normal thing to do — and now there are two dates to keep straight instead of one. Left to memory, the newer carton usually wins, because it is easier to grab and easier to picture as "the current one." The older carton drifts toward the back, not because anyone decided to neglect it, but because nothing about two identical-looking cartons prompts you to check which is which before reaching in.

What this means the next time you restock something you already have

The fix is not a table of exceptions to remember. It is one habit: when a second unit of something joins a first, check which date is earlier and put that one where your hand goes first — front of the shelf, top of the stack, whatever makes it the easy grab rather than the one you have to think about. The date itself already told you which carton to open first. The only real risk is not looking, or looking once at checkout and then never again.

This is the same reasoning that shows up any time a household ends up with duplicate groceries: it is rarely one purchase that causes waste, it is two purchases of the same thing losing track of which is older. Munch records each purchase as its own batch with its own date rather than folding everything with the same name into one entry, and when a recipe calls for an ingredient you have more than one of, it draws from the batch with the earliest date first — so which carton is "the one to open" is not something you have to remember, it is already sorted.
